European Tour: Three big names missed the cut at Porsche European Open

This week’s Porsche European Open features one of the strongest fields on the European Tour so far this season. Several major winners and Ryder Cup stars teed off at Green Eagle Golf Courses, but some of them won’t take many positives from this week. See below the three players which we didn't expect to miss the action during the weekend.

Abraham Ancer is the highest ranked golfer in the field this week. The Mexican, who plays mainly on the PGA Tour, was bookmaker’s favorite for the win on Sunday, but he surprisingly had to say goodbye to Hamburg after the second round. Ancer failed to make the cut after he played the course at four over par during each of the two days of the tournament. In the second round the Mexican made only one birdie which is not something you expect from a golfer ranked 17th in the world.

Martin Kaymer

Local favorite Martin Kaymer hoped to become the first German player since Bernhard Langer in 1995 with a win in the tournament. Kaymer played the course at one over par in the first round, but a disappointing 77 today dropped him to six over par for the tournament, three shots below the cut line. This will be Kaymer’s third missed cut in a row and his fourth in his last five starts.

Henrik Stenson

Henrik Stenson is far from the form which secured him the win at the 2016 Open Championship. Stenson, once ranked second in the world, missed the cut in eight of his last eleven starts. The Swede spends most of his time on the PGA Tour where he won for the last time in August 2017. He also claimed the title at the 2019 Hero World Challenge which is not an official PGA Tour event. It has a limited field and doesn’t give any FedEx Cup points. The experienced Swede needs to produce something very special in the next couple of months to have any chance to make his sixth Ryder Cup Appearance
