Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambition, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.
Rory McIlroy has capped off what he calls the best year of his professional career, but the 36-year-old insists he’s far from done. After being named BBC Sports Personality of the Year—following a Masters win, completing the career Grand Slam, an Irish Open victory, and a Ryder Cup triumph—McIlroy declared: “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve.”
One goal? A record-tying eighth Race to Dubai title, matching Colin Montgomerie’s Order of Merit record. “I still feel like I have a few good years ahead of me. Knock on wood, I’ve stayed injury-free. And the drive to improve is still there.”
Just a day later, McIlroy appeared ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul boxing match in Miami, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. Naturally, McIlroy was asked about his future plans there as well.
It’s unclear whether McIlroy will spend the holidays in Florida or at his new home in England’s Wentworth Estates. What’s certain is his January 2 debut with Boston Common in the second season of the TGL (Tomorrow’s Golf League). McIlroy confirmed the addition of 24-year-old American pro Michael Thorbjornsen to the team as a substitute for Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama, who will be in Australia and Japan, respectively.
OWGR and LIV Golf: ‘There’s a Chance’
The LIV Golf League has renewed efforts to gain Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) recognition. Trevor Immelman, chairman of the OWGR board since April, revealed ongoing discussions with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil—even exchanging messages during the PNC Championship. “We’re working closely to find a solution,” said Immelman. “They’ve decided to move to 72-hole events, expand their field, and may grow further.”
He emphasized the importance of meritocracy in golf: “You have to earn your place on a tour and fight to keep it. That’s been a key part of my conversations with LIV.”
