Celebrate Volunteers Week 2024 by meeting some of our fantastic volunteers - Meet Karyme!
Karyme has joined YMCA Fairthorne Manor this summer as one of our International Volunteers and comes to us from Mexico. She has been part of a Leadership programme in Mexico since 2011 and also attended the Joint Summit of the Americas looking at projects across North and South American YMCA’s, she is part of YMCA Mallorca in Mexico.
Karyme came to the UK to learn new ideas about how the YMCA at Fairthorne Manor works and take them back to the delivery of programmes in Mexico, understand more about residential programmes and immerse herself in a culture of many countries including the UK, Belgium, South Korea, Ghana and Ecuador. She also wanted the personal challenge of being so far way from home for 6 months.
She has enjoyed meeting people from different cultures both volunteers and staff and realising that some things are different but surprisingly some are very similar. There are lots of protocols and procedures to keep everyone safe on all the activities and there is a lot of care for each other as well as the children.
She says that ‘Volunteering [away from home] has proven I can do whatever I want, I am getting out of my comfort zone, but I’m nailing it’. If anyone else was considering volunteering whether away from home or on the doorstep she says ‘Go for it, you will learn a lot, you may give up a lot of your time but there will be lots to take home to your community and you will make a change to yourself’
