Volunteers Week 2024 at YMCA Fairthorne Group - Lorraine's story
Previous to joining YMCA Fairthorne Group as a Volunteer Lorraine worked in administration and pastoral services in Education which included various safeguarding roles. After finishing in education she wanted to continue to support local people using her skills and experience and thought YMCA Fairthorne Group was a perfect place to start.
Lorraine came to volunteer via a member of her family who joined the staff and has been a fixture of the team since earlier this year. She wanted to keep her skills in hand whilst training her puppy to be a PAT dog (Pets As Therapy). She has been involved in general admin, programme support ensuring out instructors are working on the areas they hold qualifications in and supporting the administration of the Young Carers Festival which is a massive undertaking with over 50 groups attending and 1000 participants.
When asked, Lorraine says that she ‘Enjoys the social aspect of the role, she wanted to be a member of a team who support each other and wanted to give up her free time for a charity, be around young people and help to make a difference, and the setting is lovely too!’
