Rory McIlroy shared the unusual mental strategy he used to win the Masters, including ignoring Bryson DeChambeau.

During the final round of the Masters, Rory McIlroy made headlines not just for his performance but for his complete lack of interaction with playing partner Bryson DeChambeau. No words were exchanged, no glances shared — a move that puzzled many, including DeChambeau himself. As McIlroy recently revealed on a podcast, this behavior was part of a deliberate mental game plan.

Heading into the final round with a two-shot lead, McIlroy faced immense pressure. Not only was he chasing his first Major win since 2014, but also the elusive career Grand Slam. Adding to the challenge was the fact that DeChambeau had defeated him at the previous year’s U.S. Open and was a fan favorite.

Bob Rotella’s advice was key to McIlroy’s mindset

To prepare mentally, McIlroy consulted renowned sports psychologist Bob Rotella. Though confident in his game, McIlroy was concerned about the dynamic with DeChambeau and the crowd support his opponent would receive. Rotella’s advice was clear: block DeChambeau out entirely. No talking, no eye contact, no reactions — just focus inward and communicate only with his caddie, Harry Diamond.

McIlroy entered a mental tunnel, concentrating solely on his own performance. The plan was tested early as he struggled and lost his lead. But during a critical stretch, McIlroy made key birdies while DeChambeau faltered with bogeys, swinging momentum back in McIlroy’s favor.

Turning point and ultimate triumph

McIlroy later said that this phase was likely the turning point. He couldn’t understand some of DeChambeau’s decisions, but once he managed to control his own doubts, everything shifted. “From that point on, I was the only one in my way,” McIlroy reflected. His biggest challenge became staying present and composed.

Although DeChambeau didn’t prevail, McIlroy still had to face Justin Rose in a playoff, where he showcased his composure and mental strength to secure the win. DeChambeau, meanwhile, was visibly confused by McIlroy’s silence, commenting after the round, “He didn’t say a word to me today.”

Looking back, McIlroy says he wouldn’t change a thing. In fact, he hopes to feel that same intensity again — because it means he’s once again playing for something truly meaningful.
