Rory McIlroy has capped off what he calls the best year of his professional career, but he’s not resting on his laurels. After winning the Masters to complete the career Grand Slam, claiming the Irish Open, and leading Europe to a Ryder Cup victory, McIlroy was named BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year. Yet, the 36-year-old is already eyeing more in 2026. “I don’t know what I’ll do next year to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve,” he said. One goal? Winning his eighth Race to Dubai title to match Colin Montgomerie’s record. “I still feel like I have a few good years left. Thankfully, I’ve stayed injury-free. The drive to improve is still there.”
Just a day later, McIlroy appeared ringside in Miami at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul boxing match, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. Naturally, McIlroy was asked about his plans and goals.
McIlroy and TGL: New Season, New Faces
McIlroy is set to return to action on January 2 with Boston Common in the second season of the tech-infused Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL). He confirmed that 24-year-old American pro Michael Thorbjornsen will serve as a substitute for the team, which includes McIlroy, Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott, and Hideki Matsuyama. “Hideki will be in Japan and Adam in Australia when we play our first match, so Michael will join Keegan and me,” McIlroy explained.

OWGR and LIV: ‘There’s a Chance’
LIV Golf is renewing its push for Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points. Trevor Immelman, chairman of the OWGR board since April, revealed ongoing talks with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” said Immelman. LIV plans to shift to 72-hole events and expand its field. “The OWGR is about meritocracy. You earn your place and fight to keep it. That’s what I’ve emphasized to LIV,” he added.
Team of the Year: Donald and McIlroy Honored
McIlroy wasn’t the only golfer celebrated at the SPOTY awards. Luke Donald’s European Ryder Cup team was named Team of the Year for their away win at Bethpage Black. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while the rest of the squad joined virtually. Donald shared his gratitude on social media, representing the team’s appreciation.
