Atlanta Drive GC wins a thrilling TGL match 7-4 against The Bay GC and remains undefeated.
The roles before the third match of the new TGL season were clear: Defending champion Atlanta Drive GC arrived at the SoFi Center with an opening victory under their belt, while The Bay Golf Club was making its debut in the new season. After 15 holes, the final score was 7-4. The decisive lead was secured by the team featuring Billy Horschel, Patrick Cantlay, and substitute Chris Gotterup, who performed strongly in the singles format, scoring four of six possible points for Atlanta. After an even start, Atlanta took control from hole 11 onward. “We come in here, practice, play our game – it fits,” said Horschel. Even without injured Justin Thomas, the team’s depth is proving strong. This marked their ninth win in the last ten TGL matches – an impressive record.
TGL: Gotterup brings Atlanta back into the game
For the second consecutive time, Chris Gotterup contributed to Atlanta’s scoreboard and was again a key factor. After a scoreless start on hole 1, he put Atlanta ahead with a par putt from just under nine feet on hole 2. The Bay responded immediately by employing the Hammer on following holes, putting Atlanta behind 1-2. The first clear momentum shift occurred on hole 6, known as “Alpine.” After The Bay had leveled the match earlier, Gotterup holed a chip-in eagle to bring Atlanta back on par. Even though The Bay did not use the Hammer at this point, the emotional impact was tangible: tie game. “I try to see as much as possible on the greens – with all the lights it’s not easy,” Gotterup later said. “But after making shots like that, you know what to expect.”
