Monkstown Golf Club

Description

Monkstown Golf Club was founded in 1908. Since 1990, the work of the Scottish head groundsman has helped Monkstown to become one of the best old parkland courses in the Province of Munster. The club was extended to 18 holes in 1972, many bunkers were renovated in the early 1990s and interesting water hazards were added to the back nine holes, improving both the challenge and the aesthetics of the course. Prior to 1972, the clubhouse was housed in a castle built in 1636 and still standing, but in 1994 the new clubhouse was extended and now offers the golfer every amenity. The front nine holes offer magnificent views of Cork Harbour and challenge even the best golfers. The back nine are some of the most difficult final holes Ireland has to offer. The 17th hole, a 392 m long par 4 with index 1, is followed by a 377 m long par 4 with index 7. Together, these two holes have ruined many a good score.
