The famous "sun coast", Costa del Sol, is located on the south coast of Spain in Andalusia. The Costa del Sol is located in the province of Malaga and stretches from Estepona to Nerja. Tourism is of great importance in Spain as a whole, and golf tourism is also very well developed.
Spain occupies a leading position in European golf tourism. The range of courses on offer is huge, and on the Costa del Sol alone, which is also jokingly referred to as the Costa del Golf, there is a rich selection of around 20 golf courses of all kinds. Both experts and beginners will find the right golf course here, and you can often hit your balls on greens with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean. The mild climate and many hours of sunshine guarantee a long season and golf can be played practically all year round on the Costa del Sol. When it opened in 1904, the "Real Club de Golf Puerta de Hierro" was the first golf course in Spain. Today, golf is one of the most popular sports practiced on the Iberian Peninsula, surpassed only by soccer and basketball. Golf pioneers such as José María Olazábal, Severiano Ballesteros, Ángel Gallardo and Manuel Piñero contributed greatly to the popularity of this healthy sport. Golf can be described as a healthy sport because the steady exercise in the fresh air clears the mind and soothes the soul. Golf is also very good for the heart and circulation, helps to burn fat and build muscle, increases concentration and reduces stress. Golfing on the Costa del Sol is quite affordable, the green fee is available here for relatively little money, very good for beginners and people who just want to try out golf without great ambitions.
Sun and beach are the magic words with which the Costa del Sol scores points. It is therefore not only golfers who enjoy the unique landscape, all types of water sports are of course at home here. Andalusia is known for its thoroughbred horses, among other things, and equestrian enthusiasts get their money's worth. The Costa Del Sol is also a worthwhile destination for active tourists, as the range of sports on offer is extremely diverse.
The sunny coast is in season all year round, as temperatures rarely drop below 10 degrees Celsius, even in the winter months. In midsummer, the average maximum temperature is 30 degrees, although the light breeze on the coast means that this is not felt as oppressive. Those who are sensitive to heat should still travel to the Costa del Sol in early summer or fall. The months of April and May promise pleasant temperatures, as do September and October. The weather is extremely friendly and sunny, as the name of the coast suggests, and it rarely rains. Spain is in the same time zone as Germany and, as in Germany, Central European Summer Time applies here between the end of March and the end of October.
The national currency in Spain is the euro, so there is no need to convert foreign currency on vacation. In addition to cash, other means of payment are also accepted. In many Spanish stores you can pay by credit card, for example Visa card, on presentation of your identity card or passport, and there is usually a notice to this effect in the entrance area. Traveler's cheques can also be used in many stores, hotels and restaurants, but again only in conjunction with valid identification documents.
If you want to use your cell phone a lot on vacation, you can use roaming or get a Spanish SIM card directly in Spain or even in Germany. The disadvantage is that you have to pay a registration fee when you buy a Spanish SIM card. It is therefore only worth buying one if you are a frequent caller, as the charges for calls to Germany are very low and domestic calls only cost a fraction of the price. Buying a SIM card is also worthwhile for holidaymakers who spend a lot of time in Spain, perhaps even owning a vacation home there.
The best way to get to Spain is by plane, as many destinations in Spain are served from Germany and Málaga is one of the most important charter airports on the Costa del Sol. But you can also reach Spain easily by bus and train. If you don't want to make the long journey by car but still don't want to do without your vehicle, you can use the car train, otherwise there is a comprehensive network of car rental companies. However, public transport connections within Spain are very good, with intercity buses running between the larger cities and the main vacation resorts.
The official language is Spanish, but other languages are spoken and maintained, such as Catalan, Basque and Galician, which are considered official regional languages. No special vaccinations are recommended for a stay in Spain.
The rules of etiquette are adapted to the usual Central European standard, clothing is not overly elegant, but rather somewhat casual. If you are on vacation in Spain, you should definitely try the culinary specialties, the paella is as varied as it is famous. On the Costa del Sol, you can also enjoy the legendary fish dishes, fresh from the sea with that special Mediterranean touch. A glass of the region's full-bodied red wine rounds off the meal; Spanish wine culture has a long tradition.
