If you travel to Houston in spring, you may have the chance to experience the city's biggest golf event, the Shell Houston Open. This is where the world's golfing elite prepare for the Masters in Augusta.
You can also experience many other events in the Texan metropolis, such as the American carnival festival "Mardi Gras", which is particularly popular in the southern states of the USA, as well as barbecue and beer festivals.
In no other city in the USA do the inhabitants eat out as often as in Houston. Accordingly, a large number of different restaurants have settled in the metropolis, offering a variety of dishes at affordable prices.
Houston's cultural diversity is one of the main reasons why its cuisine is considered one of the most diverse in the USA. Due to its proximity to Mexico, Tex-Mex dishes are a big hit in the region. A typical Tex-Mex dish is chili con carne or fajitas, for example. The influence of the neighboring state of Louisiana is also noticeable, where Creole cuisine is extremely popular. Typical dishes here include rice with red beans or red jambalaya.
Real Texans naturally love XXL barbecues. For this reason, you will certainly not be able to avoid tasty meat specialties during your vacation.
The entry regulations of the USA apply for a trip to the Texan city. According to these regulations, German citizens can stay in the USA for a maximum of 90 days without a visa if they have a passport that is valid for the entire duration of their stay, are traveling with a regular airline, have a return or onward ticket and have obtained an electronic entry permit (ESTA) online.
Travel to Houston is of course mainly possible by air. There are three airports around the metropolis, of which George Bush Intercontinental Airport is the largest.
