The largest North Frisian island of Sylt stretches in a north-south direction along the coast of Schleswig-Holstein. Every year, the 40-kilometer-long west beach and the well-known health resorts of Kampen, Wenningstedt and Westerland attract many tourists to the island. Sylt has just under 18,000 permanent residents and so tourists dominate the scene, especially during the summer months. Sylt has been connected to the mainland via the Hindenburgdamm since 1927. Between the mainland and Sylt lies the Wadden Sea, which largely falls dry at low tide and invites visitors to go mudflat hiking. Golf is not neglected on Sylt either. There are now four beautiful golf courses on Sylt where you can play during your vacation.
Players are confronted with many interesting challenges on Sylt's four golf courses. The constant wind and the fast greens are constant companions on the round. Some of the courses offer wonderful views of the surrounding dunes and the North Sea. With the Sylt Marine Golf Club and the Budersand Golf Club, there are also two real links courses on Sylt, which fit perfectly into the Sylt dune landscape and present players with exciting challenges with deep top bunkers. Those who are able to hit the ball flat and far can at least partially take the wind out of the game. Trees, which provide natural wind protection on other courses, are almost non-existent on the Budersand and Marine courses.
The Sylt Golf Club also has an exciting 18-hole course located between Wenningstedt and Kampen. The black and white striped Kampen lighthouse is a constant eye-catcher during the round. The Morsum Golf Club is also worth a visit. The course at Morsum Golf Club is the oldest golf course on Sylt and is perhaps an attractive challenge for this very reason.
In addition to golf, there are a variety of activities that can be seen as a good balance to golf. Bicycles can be hired and used to explore the island. In the summer months, the beach is always an option. Here you can swim, look for shells or play frisbee. Long walks are also a great way to relax and enjoy your vacation. Cutter trips to the seal banks in the north of the island are also a real experience. The captains of the cutters are always up for a bit of fun and ensure a good atmosphere on board with their banter. Of course, mudflat walks are also a wonderful experience. It is advisable to have a local guide with you, as the tide often comes in faster than you think.
In 2009, the Wadden Sea was declared a World Heritage Site, putting it on the same list as the Great Barrier Reef, the Galapagos Islands and Niagara Falls. The island's dunes are a nature reserve and may not be entered. There are active dunes on Sylt that are constantly moving. However, the island also has problems to contend with. The sea and the constant pressure of the tides remove a lot of sand every year and pose problems for those responsible on Sylt. The typical wooden pile groynes are a familiar sight for Sylt holidaymakers.
A crab roll with freshly caught crabs is definitely a culinary specialty on Sylt. Fresh oysters with lemon juice are also included. Gosch dishes are also considered culinary specialties. Gosch now has locations all over Germany, for example in Hamburg's Kiez district and on the Baltic Sea in Scharbeutz. But Gosch's success story began in List, where the company's headquarters are still located today. In any case, it is certain that gourmets will get a taste for it when they visit the island of Sylt. The North Sea island has the highest culinary star density in Germany.
The climate on Sylt is influenced by the Gulf Stream. From a golfer's perspective, the best months on Sylt are May to September. Of course, good golfing conditions can also prevail in April or October. Nevertheless, Sylt is an island in the North Sea where weather conditions are often unpredictable.
There are various ways to reach the island. Guests who do not want to do without their own car can travel by car train via the Hindenburgdamm. The island can also be reached by ferry, which arrives in List. The airlines Air Berlin and Lufthansa offer flights to Westerland. There is also Sylt Air, which offers scheduled flights between Hamburg and Sylt. Prices vary depending on the time of travel. Of course, the weight and dimensions of the golf bag are also decisive factors.
